Bob Michaels

Bob MichaelsCertain things you expect to always see at high school sporting event in the Elmira Corning area. You know the teams will show up. There will be fans and officials, and perhaps most reliably of all, there will be Bob Michaels. Andrew Legare, Sports Editor for the Elmira Star Gazette wrote that of Bob Michaels during an in-depth article detailing a week in the life of "The Voice of the Twin Tiers".

Bob joined the Pembrook Pines Media Group in 1995, recruited to help establish a local sports identity for WELM-AM. Calling upon his experience with news and sports in West Palm Beach and Jacksonville, Florida, where he was also an independent reporter for Mutual Radio, NBC and ABC Sports, it didn't take long for Bob to establish WELM-AM 1410 as the number 1 sports radio station in the Twin Tiers. Sports fans in the Twin Tiers get their first serving of local and regional sports with Bob Michaels during the "Mike and Mike in the Morning" show with two updates each hour 6A-10A.

Bob has taken "The Games People Play" well beyond the box scores in Elmira-Corning. Beginning with the opening kick-off of high school football to the final horn at the state lacrosse championship, chances are you have heard this play by play. WELM has provided the type of radio that diehard fans have requested. It includes ESPN, New York Yankees, NFL, LPGA, and Motorsports, but, it is local coverage that serves as the main course, defining WELM'S status in the region.

High school football in the fall, basketball in the winter, lacrosse, baseball, and softball in the spring is the bread and butter ingredients for WELM'S success. Behind all that, Bob's passion, which includes Elmira College, men's and women's hockey, basketball and men's lacrosse. Add to the menu Mansfield University baseball. Bob has been the voice of Mountaineer baseball since 1999.

Bob Michael's dedication to his craft has not gone unnoticed by his peers, as the New York State Broadcasters Association recently accorded him its "Excellence in Broadcasting Award" (his third in the past five years).

Keeping up with his fast-paced approach to Twin Tiers sports coverage has become even easier for a world-wide audience of "Local Fans" now that WELM-AM is streaming games on the internet, Bob's motto... " as long as there is a game, you know we will be there".
